Breast augmentation is the most common form of cosmetic surgery in the United States. If you are not satisfied with the size of your breasts due to weight loss, pregnancy, or other factors, breast augmentation surgery may be for you.This procedure increases your breast volume to the desired size and shape and can be a life-changing experience for some, increasing your self-esteem and self-image. An ideal candidate has fully developed breasts, and is able to emotionally make the decision to move forward with surgery. The candidate should have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery; there should be an understanding that the procedure will positively change your appearance, but perfection is not the goal.

There are several ways in which to perform a breast augmentation; your physician will discuss the options with you, depending on what your specific goals are. The surgical incision can be made in one of three areas: underneath the breast, around the low portion of the areola, or within the armpit.After the incision is made, the surgeon will insert the implant either behind the breast gland, or underneath the pectoral muscle, depending on what is best for you. Two shapes are available, the 'anatomical' shape or a more rounded implant.

Recovery time after breast augmentation varies from patient to patient. Generally, a post-surgical recovery time of about 24 to 48 hours should be expected. You should refrain from any activity which requires excessive motion for at least a couple of days, and swelling and soreness can be expected for a week or two following surgery.

Breast augmentation is long lasting but may not be a permanent fix. Fluctuations in weight, hormonal changes, and the aging process may affect how your implants appear. These changes may be discussed with your surgeon; follow up appointments may be needed several years after your procedure.
