Do fine lines and wrinkles on your face leave you feeling embarrassed and self-conscious? Botox and/or dermal fillers may be the perfect solution for you! These two simple, non-invasive procedures reduce lines and wrinkles, leaving you looking rejuvenated and years younger!
Botox has been used since the 1980's to treat muscle disorders, and was approved by the FDA in 2002 to help rid of crow's feet, frown lines, brow lines, and other facial lines. Facial wrinkles are caused by contracting muscles underneath the skin. During the procedure, Botox will be injected into the desired area causing the underlying muscle to relax, therefore reducing wrinkles. These lines will go away either immediately following the procedure, after a couple hours, or up to a couple of days in some cases. The result is temporary and usually lasts about three to eight months. As long as this procedure is performed under medical supervision, the risks are very minimal. Side effects may include bruising, swelling, nausea, and headache.
Dermal fillers are similar to Botox in that they also are used to reduce lines and wrinkles around the face. They are also used to make scars less visible, fill in lips and cheeks, and shape the jaw line and other areas of the face. Fillers may either be synthetic, or natural. Because the body cannot absorb the synthetic fillers, they have been known to be longer lasting than natural fillers, sometimes almost permanent. If you have many allergies, you may need to use a natural filler in order to reduce the side effects. There are several different types of fillers; your doctor will discuss which one is best for you depending on what procedure you'd like to get and what allergies you have. The results vary widely depending on what type of filler is used. For example, collagen fillers may only last two to six months, while other types can last a couple of years or more. Side effects are similar to the side effects of Botox: allergic reactions, bruising, swelling, numbness, and infection.
